Season's greetings

• Welcome to the last SAN newsletter of 2018, a year that has seen our sector take some big strides to becoming a mainstream element of the hospitality sector.

Here in the UK, the £430 million acquisition of SACO by US asset management giant Brookfield was a significant milestone, representing not only the biggest transaction to date by a wide margin, but the first time both buyer and seller in a major deal were US investment houses.

In the US, forward thinking companies are evolving from the traditional serviced apartment and corporate housing models - BridgeStreet's bold transformation in to a distribution platform has been fascinating to watch, and RESIDE Worldwide's plan for organic and M&A growth to encompass a broad range of accommodation offers has also been noteworthy.

In Asia, the sector is growing at a phenomenal pace, particularly in China, and the continued rise of the design-led aparthotel is a trend that I think will continue in to next year.

2019 will, if anything, be even more eventful than this year, and here at IHM, we are certainly kicking the year off with a bang - with ground-breaking events in Berlin, Bangkok, the Serviced Apartment Awards in London and Serviced Apartment Summit Americas New York in the first four months of the year.

I'd like to wish all our readers a wonderful festive season and a happy new year. We will be back with our next newsletter on Tuesday January 8.
