Dear Friend

Welcome to the first edition of Cyber Insights with Mercury IT, an informative newsletter that will keep you abreast of the latest cybersecurity tips, security breaches and assist you in staying aware of potential scams that could harm you or your business.

The COVID-19 related scams are still by far the most prevalent scams in the market right now, so be on the lookout. Cybercriminals will try to use whatever is current in the news to get a response, whether that's the US president announcing he has COVID-19 or that there is a new vaccine available. Do you know about the different types of #COVID19 scams circulating? > Read more

Trading Reference Australia has had an Unauthorised Database Access that is still being investigated. They are one of Australia's largest tenant information databases.

The Scouts Victoria was hit by ransomware in July and August. Sensitive information including names, phone numbers, credit card information, bank details, ID documents including passport information and driver's license details were exposed.

Improve Your Passwords.

Use passphrases. Recently, security standards strongly recommend using a passphrase rather than a single word. A good passphrase is one that is unique to you so that you can remember it but is also secret enough that no one else can guess it.

Never use the same password for multiple accounts. If cybercriminals steal your password from one account and you're using that password on other accounts, then you've given them the key to all of the accounts where you've used the same password.

Use a password manager. If your organisation allows it, use a password manager to create, store, and sync complex passwords across multiple devices. Password managers only require you to remember one master password. Ask your internal IT (or other applicable) team to see if this is something you can do.
