Subject: Women's Health & Awareness Campaign

Sapphire Green Earth was established in 2009, and our mission to create awareness about the dangers of toxic ingredients in everyday consumer products, while offering safe, alternative products, has not changed.  As part of this mission, we are proud to be a part of the 'Now You Know' campaign, an international movement to spread awareness about the potential health risks associated with many commonly used feminine hygiene products.

Women’s health is an under-represented topic, yet it is a vital topic because it affects everyone - your mother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, you.  When it comes to women's health, and feminine care products in particular, many women don't know what these products are made with, and the impact they may have on their health.
"I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better.”
― Maya Angelou
Women do amazing things…no matter who you are or where you’re from, it took the miraculous acts of a women to manifest your existence.  From the age of puberty to menopause, women and young women to be rely on feminine care products to keep them clean, dry, moisturized and feeling confident.  Despite their long term use and high frequency of usage (the average woman will use over 16,800 tampons and pads over the course of her lifetime), the ingredients used to make such products are seldom revealed.  Since tampons and feminine pads are currently regulated as "medical devices" by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), they are not considered under the law to be cosmetic in nature.  As a result, manufacturers are not required to disclose their ingredients on packaging, and consequently, they rarely do.
What's in Your Feminine Care Products???

Based on independent studies, many traditional feminine sanitary pads and tampons are made with ingredients that are known to pose serious health risks.  These ingredients include petro-chemicals, synthetic fibers, wood chips, artificial colors, polyester, adhesives, polyethylene (PET), polypropylene and propylene glycol (PEG), etc.

In addition, as affirmed by Dr. Joseph Mercola, “…to give tampons and pads that pristine, "clean" white look, the fibers used must be bleached. Chlorine is commonly used for this, which can create toxic dioxin and other disinfection-by-products (DBPs) such as trihalomethane. Studies show that dioxin collects in your fatty tissues, and according to a draft report by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), dioxin is a serious public health threat that has no "safe" level of exposure! Published reports show that even low or trace levels of dioxins may be linked to:
  • Abnormal tissue growth in the abdomen and reproductive organs
  • Abnormal cell growth throughout the body
  • Immune system suppression
  • Hormonal and endocrine system disruption”
In addition to bleaching agents used to make feminine products “appear” clean, the chemicals used to create fragrances add another element of risks.  Based on a report by Leigh Erin Connealy, M.D. “Fragrance is a mixture of ingredients that can include any of over 3,000 different chemicals; and the components of any one fragrance are usually kept secret by manufacturers."  According to a master list of fragrance chemicals made available by the International Fragrance Association, fragrances can include chemicals which are carcinogens, irritants, allergens, and potential endocrine disruptors."
Women for Voices on Earth (WVE) commissioned testing for the feminine hygiene products of one major brand.
Potential Health Risks
What you don’t know can hurt you

Our skin is our largest organ, and is also very permeable, especially the sensitive skin around a woman’s vaginal walls - and inside of it.  As sanitary pads and tampons are in constant contact with a women’s skin over time, the chemicals they release are transferred directly into the blood stream and organs.  According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, “…once these chemicals find their way into your body, they tend to accumulate over time because you typically lack the necessary enzymes to break them down.“

Most traditional feminine pads contain toxins which may cause serious health risks, including:
  • Fibroids
  • UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections)
  • Bacterial / Yeast Infections
  • Cancers – Uterine and Breast
  • Miscarriages

  • Infertility
  • Endorcrine Disruption
  • Birth Defects
  • Endometriosis
  • Allergic Rash
  • Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)
Women’s Voices for the Earth (WVE) released the Chem Fatale Report in 2014 in which they outlined the potential hazards of conventional tampon ingredients such as dioxins, furans, pesticide residues, and fragrance chemicals and the potential link between these ingredients and cancer, reproductive harm and endocrine disruption, as well as infection, irritation and allergic reaction.
Do you know Robin Danielson?
Why You Should
Robin Danielson (1954 - 1998)

Robin Danielson was a victim of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), a rare but potentially life-threatening illness that has been linked to high-absorbency tampon use. Robin's death could have been prevented if only she had been aware of the symptoms.

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) has recently reintroduced the Robin Danielson Feminine Hygiene Product Safety Act (H.R. 1708), an act she first introduced over 20 year ago.  The bill directs the National Institute of Health to research the impact ingredients in feminine care products may be having on women’s health.  “We need more dedicated and substantial research to address unanswered health concerns regarding the safety of feminine hygiene products,” Maloney told Rewire.

Maloney first introduced legislation related to tampon safety in the 105th Congress with the Tampon Safety and Research Act of 1997.  In 1999, Maloney introduced the Robin Danielson Act.  Maloney said she “introduced this legislation so that American women can make educated consumer decisions about a product that has the potential to endanger their health and their lives."  She has been trying to pass this legislation for almost two decades, but every time the act is prevented from going forward to a vote due to the lack of attention from women’s health activists and the media.  It was last submitted in 2015 and is currently in the Committee on Energy and Commerce.

Center for Disease Control (CDC) Facts

Many women, before and after Robin Danielson’s death, have succumbed to TSS.   According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one to two of every 100,000 women between the ages of 15-44 years old will be diagnosed with TSS each year.  The last national surveillance was conducted in 1987, however, and reporting of TSS by the states is voluntary.
What is the Solution?
Women Deserve to Know

Women have a right to know the ingredients in feminine care products so they can make informed decisions about products which may present unnecessary health risks.  We now know that there are serious health risks associated with the ingredients that traditional feminine care products are made with, yet these fundamental products continue to be deemed harmless, due to the lack of research and awareness about them.

Sapphire Green Earth now offers women safer, natural, alternative feminine care products that are not only effective, but beneficial to their health.  For more information on these products, click here
No matter which products you choose to use, we hope this information will help create awareness, spark more conversations about feminine hygienic products, encourage women to be more cognizant of the products they use, and if so compelled, take action to evoke legislative changes because - Now you know!
