April/May 2019
Dear readers,

May is a month of important decisions: between the 23rd to 26th Brussels, the European elections will take place allowing millions of European citizens to decide who will be steering the route of the EU during the following five years.

These elections may have significant changes not only in the composition of the EU Parliament and Commissioners board, but also in the institutions in charge of setting the strategy that our continent will follow. Among the citizenship concerns, the environment, and specially climate change, occupy a top place in the list. And you, are you voting this time?

To mobilize different European Political Groups and national parties, EUROPARC produced and is in sharing with candidates for the EU Parliament, the Policy Paper “Our Natural Heritage: the Key to Europe’s Future". The aim is to take action on different topics in order to ensure a sustainable future for our economy and our environment, with Protected Areas playing a central role.

Other hot topic in Brussels currently is Youth engagement. Yesterday the "European Youth Week" came to an end, and we had one of our youth representatives - and an ambassador of the EUROPARC Youth Manifesto, participating as an invited speaker in 2 nature-dedicated workshops. Meet Leonardo Cerno, the Youth voice of the Prealpi Giulie Nature Park.

Look back, to look ahead

There are moments we need to consider the path we've been walking, to better fine tune where we are heading... We invite you to look at our work in 2018, and read the words of Ignace Schops in our Annual Report 2018 (the report is available in English, French and German).

As this month we will also open registrations for EUROPARC Conference 2019, we invite you for a moment of reflection and inspiration from EUROPARC Conference 2018 with the beautiful reportthat the Cairngorms National Park has prepared for us.

Meanwhile, have you decided to celebrate the European Day of Parks? We hope you will! We know that many parks are organising activities....but have you also submitted your events in our website? Please do it as soon as possible!

And finally, EUROPARC Webinars! In May there will be 4 interesting webinars you can choose from. The first is this thursday, 9th May, on EU Policies and Periurban Parks (and we will try a new, more interactive system!)
Then, EUROPARC Atlantic Isles is organising a webinar on the use of Drones and another on Coastal Management, and finally, on the 24th May, we will celebrate the European Day of Parks with a special webinar in partnership with IUCN Panorama Solutions

We wish Happy readings,
Your Directorate team
