About the AIS NSW ITAB 

Australian Industry Standards (AIS) is contracted by the NSW Department of Industry to provide independent advice on training and related matters to support the Vocational Education and Training (VET) system for the Public Sector in NSW. This ITAB grouping includes Corrections, Local Government, Public Safety, Public Sector and Water industries. 
Smart and Skilled Update No 95

Update No 95 includes information about: Training Needs Identification Part Qualification funding for priority skills sets (Bushfire Recovery and COVID-19 response); current arrangements regarding certified documents when enrolling students under Smart and Skilled; and, National Careers Institute Partnership Grants program. Training Services NSW COVID-19 Update

Training Services NSW (TSNSW), as part of the Department of Education, is monitoring COVID-19 in NSW and implementing responses to support those affected. More information is available here.
Continuing Apprentices Placement Service (CAPS)

The Continuing Apprentices Placement Service is a free matching service that helps apprentices in skills shortage occupations who have lost their job due to the economic downturn to find new employers so that they can complete their training. The Continuing Apprentices Register allows employers to browse through the list of out-of-trade apprentices and to request contact details if they find someone who may be suitable for their business. TAFE NSW COVID-19 Support Fee-Free Courses

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, TAFE NSW, in conjunction with the NSW Government, is offering a number of fee-free* short courses that can be completed in just days or weeks, offering practical skills and experiences across a range of industries. For more information click here.
Training to support bushfire affected communities

The NSW Government is supporting industries and communities needing more skilled workers to rebuild communities and support displaced workers or business severely impacted by the bushfires through funding various training courses. For more information click here.

The Department of Health has provided updated information on the novel coronavirus for the education and training sector. This has been distributed to VET providers and is being sent to you as a VET sector stakeholder, for information. The factsheets can be found on the Department of Education website for you to share by clicking here.
Australian Industry and Skills Committee

AISC is ensuring Australia’s national training system is well positioned to address the workforce challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, the AISC has established the Emergency Response Sub-committee (the sub-committee). The sub-committee held its first meeting on 8 April 2020. More information can be found here.

The Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business

The Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business (Employment) was consolidated with the Department of Education, to form the new Department of Education, Skills and Employment. Small business functions from Employment transferred to the new Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources. These changes took effect on 1 February 2020. For more information click here.
COAG releases draft VET reform roadmap

The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Skills Council is developing a VET reform roadmap and last month released The Vocational Education and Training (VET) Reform Roadmap Consultation Draft. View here.
Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) update

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, ASQA has extended transition periods for 51 qualifications due to expire between 17 March and 15 July until 31 December 2020. For the full list click here.

New Infection Control Skill Set announced

The Australian Government has announced the fast-tracking of a new national infection control skill set endorsed by all Council of Australian Government (COAG) Skills Council Ministers. The infection control skill set will be delivered as a short course to quickly qualify Australians to effectively stop the spread of germs and disease in the workplace. Work is currently underway on the Training Packages the following IRCs are responsible for. More information is available at the links provided.
Only industry sectors which fall under the ITAB coverage have been provided. For information about other industry sectors refer to the relevant SSO websites. There are no current Public Sector IRC projects.

PUA Public Safety Training Package
The Australian Industry and Skills Committee has agreed to postpone the Public Safety Training Package - Community Safety review, in response to a request from the Public Safety Industry Reference Committee (IRC).

The IRC requested the project be postponed as key stakeholders were unavailable to participate in the project due to ongoing work in relation to the bushfires.
Due to the COVID-19 restrictions events have been either put on hold or will now be held via video conference. 

The ITAB will be conducting a series of regional Trainer Assessor video conferences for Water and Local Government sectors on the following dates (1:00-4:00PM):
  • 21 May 2020 - Western NSW
  • 27 May 2020 - Riverina
  • 4 June 2020 - Hunter and Central Coast
  • 11 June 2020 - North Coast & Mid North Coast
  • 18 June 2020 - Illawarra and South East NSW
  • 25 June 2020 - New England
