Subject: Implementing Multi-Level Fact Tables Using SQL

Hello and Welcome!

This is Peter Nolan again from Instant Business Intelligence!

Thank YOU for being on my email list!

YOU are MUCH appreciated!

I recently sent out an email talking a little about Ralph Kimballs company Metaphor Computer Systems.

I would love to see lots of people using the new Meta5 to be able to do what we were doing 25 years ago!

This email is about one of the "Ralph Kimball" things we have been doing for 25 years. Building multi-level data models.

This was the style of Data Modeling inside relational databases that Ralph Kimball pioneered.

I am certainly not going to take any credit for Ralphs ideas!

My C++ #SeETL product made it simple, fast and cheap to implement multi-level data models.

Before #SeETL you could buy Ralphs Red-Brick or you could "do it the hard way".

For the last 9 years it has been "bugging" me that I have not been able to figure out how to migrate this portion of processing across to SQL.

I have tried. Many times!

But I always came up empty handed.

For the last 9 years I have not been able to figure out the answer to this question:

"How do I implement incrementally updated multi-level summary fact tables, as per C++ #SeETL, in Ansi SQL?"

Well, this morning I sat down in my home office and I decided I was going to have another crack at this problem.

I was asked a question recently that had me look at this in a different way and that different way was the "boost" I needed.

I am REALLY pleased to have figured this out because it means that anyone, anywhere, can implement incrementally updated multi-level fact tables on pretty much any sql database.

So if you would like to read the blog post?

I see this new idea as quite amazing to come about after all these years. I mean, starting out in the Metaphor days we have been building multi-level fact tables and their proxies in cubes for more than 30 years now.

But it has been VERY hard to do.

So much so if you look around very few companies have done this properly. They just keep retaining details and loading cubes.

There is a LOT of redundant sorting and summarisation happening out there in ETL world.

If you are one of them? You will want to read the blog post!

If you would like to ask any questions about this?

Just hit reply and ask me questions on my email, or if you want to video conference with me I am on skype at peternolan9.

If you want me to build your multi-level summary fact tables for you? My current rate is EUR50/USD60 per hour.

Ok?

One last point. Since I am not longer welcome on linkedin?

Please share this post with all your colleagues who build data warehouses for a living. They will want to know!

Thanks for reading!

I wish you a great day!

Best Regards

Peter

PS. You can download our open source and free #SeETL Software from here. This is the software I wrote to be able to deliver data warehouses faster, cheaper, better than anyone else.

Yours free for being on my email list!
