For Immediate Release:

DECEMBER 5, 2019, NORWALK, CT – The Board of Directors of the Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County (CAFC) has announced the appointment of Dr. David L. Green as the new executive director of the organization, effective January 1, 2020. The Board expresses its gratitude for the service of Angela Whitford, who has been executive director since September 2014 and is leaving to pursue other opportunities.

Cindy Vaccaro, Board President, expressed the board’s warm wishes to Angela for her future, while welcoming David Green as the new executive director. “David will be following a path that he and Angela created together. As they worked so closely together, this will be a seamless transition for the CAFC. Angela leaves us in terrific shape after accomplishing several significant initiatives.”

During her tenure, Angela significantly strengthened the organization in the face of state budget cuts and funding uncertainties, engaging a wide range of corporations and foundations that now support the Cultural Alliance and its projects. She inaugurated and oversaw the increasingly successful Arts & Culture Empowerment (ACE) Awards, started in May 2016 to celebrate individuals, organizations, and businesses that have made significant contributions to the Fairfield County community through arts and culture. She also led the Cultural Alliance in fundraising for and overseeing the creation of a single dynamic new interactive website, launched in November 2018, replacing two separate sites. The new integrated website attracts 4,000 visits a month, providing information on some 60 unique events a week, as well as updated information on the Cultural Alliance’s activities and resources for its membership.

David Green joined the Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County <> in September 2013 as Director of Programs and Membership, under founding executive director Ryan Odinak. With a PhD in American Studies from Brown University, David had worked at the New York Foundation for the Arts for 10 years, first as Assistant Director of Artists Fellowships, then as Director of Communications. In 1996, he was appointed founding Executive Director of the National Initiative for a Networked Cultural Heritage, a national advocacy nonprofit based in Washington D.C. Then, with an Advanced Certificate from NYU in Strategy and Leadership, he opened Knowledge Culture Consulting in 2005, working for Learning Worlds in New York, and as Director of Content Development and Project Manager for the NSF-funded Art of Science Learning project.

In David’s six years with the Cultural Alliance he has succeeded in quadrupling organization and artist memberships, from some 150 to 600 members. His goal throughout has been to integrate cultural nonprofits, creative businesses, and individual artists as partners in building the creative economy of Fairfield County. As a team, Angela and David have demonstrated how the arts and culture are an industry — a creative and economic driver of the community, deserving greater investment and partnerships. They have increasingly reached out to municipal economic and community development officers, selectmen and mayors, planners and developers, chambers of commerce and Rotary Clubs to champion the integral role arts and culture play in the vibrant life of our region.

Working with David Green, to make up the Cultural Alliance team are, in alphabetical order: Viktoriya Barabanova, Administrative Assistant; John P. Cusano, former Community Development Coordinator for the CT Office of the Arts, serving as Community Development Consultant; Meri Erickson, Communications Manager; and Catherine McGrath, Development Consultant and Grant Writer.
